Chronicles of Mothers and Daughters

Deborah doesn't mind taking trips with her mom, Judi. "It's fun to travel with a friend, and I consider my mom a good friend," she explains. Artista Creative Safaris for Women was a great chance for them to do something creative together. Judi, in her sixties, recommends that women travel with their daughters. She even suggests, "If you have an interest in something, expose your daughter to it." Deborah added, "Being immersed in a new experience brings us closer and creates new memories. I'm reminded of our trip whenever I look at our paintings."

When Lisa and her teenage daughter, Alexis, went surfing at Las Olas Surf Safaris for Women, Alexis got to see her 46-year old mom in a new light. She recalls, "My mom was nervous about surfing, but so willing to try everything and she really stuck with it. I was really proud of her." Following their surf adventure, Lisa booked the two for an En Cera encaustic (hot wax) painting safari, knowing that Alexis, her youngest, would be heading off to college soon. Glass artist Lisa recalls, "I was worried she'd get bored, but she really got in to it and didn't want to leave the studio." And Alexis observed, "There are so many parallels between the two trips."

To Our Strong Moms - My Sister Ends Her Battle With Cancer

After a three year battle with cancer, Jen, my little sister, died on March 2, 2007. She's pictured on the right with our mom, her daughter, Meghan, and my dog, Annie, on their final walk on the beach together.

Jen was a devoted wife and the mother of three young children. Her love for her family fueled her struggle while her compassion for others enabled her to face her challenge with grace and dignity- never complaining, always seeing the sunny side. Our mother, Ann, and her mother-in-law, Carol, supported her for three long years helping run the household while Jen fought a vicious illness.

Ironically, Jen's mission long before she became ill was raising money to fight the disease that would ultimately take her life. A tireless athlete, she participated in events as a runner, swimmer, bike rider, and volunteer, especially in the Pan Massachusetts Challenge for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This August, Jen's husband, Mike, and her many friends will ride in that event, carrying the torch and raising money to fight cancer in Jen's memory.
